Double Whamey

Hi All

What next.  Today we have been to my husband's GP(finally able to get to Rockhampton by car after 2 weeks of road closure) then urgently to a private hospital to have ultrascans of his leg.  Then off  to another hospital for a consultation with the GP, blood tests and injections.  My husband has DVT,  deep vein thrombosis in the entire length of his left leg.  (a huge clot) and very serious  We are off by plane to Brisbane on Wednesday - God only knows if he will be able to fly with me.  Dr thinks it might be okay as it is only about 1 hour trip.  My husband will start Warfarin this evening and is to have blood tests every 3 days until when??? I have to administer an injection into his stomach every morning until the Warafin kicks in about 2 weeks time and his bloods are what the GP wants them to be.  I am very scared - and of course being a male just says "I'm okay".  I now know how he feels when I am diagnosed.  Very frightening - I will try and stay very busy. • WOW, Leonie, I have been away and am slowly going through comments. How is your hubby now? Hang in there. You'd be an awesome nurse!XXX

  • Hi Girl, you have been having a very trying time. Floods, cutt off from the world, hubby in the wars and you with all your probs. So glad things are happening and all is sort of under control.

How long you in Brissy for? Just the day or for longer.

As you can see by my profile pic ... I'm now a mexican hairless. I got hubby to shave it off (all the staggly stands falling all over the place) this morning.

Well darl I hope you are getting on top of things, we are all rooting for you. Let us know how you get on if you are able.

    Take Care

  • Haha, I hope you're good at bulls-eyes!   Not sure about your past lives, but you're being so fabulous in this one, you can be sure the next one will be a breeze!  :)

  • Hi there, don't know how I let this one slip by though I must admit I had a day without going on line .... "how strange" do I hear you say?  I know I'm usually nosing around most days.

This is a bugga for you both, though you are now realising a childhood ambition ... a little Florence Nightengale flitting around the wards with a great big needle reasuring your patients " ...now dear , just a little prick - it will hurt me more than it will hurt you!!!!"

All jokes aside though ...  hope all is going well with you both.  DVT can be a scary thing but knowing you and your positive attitude, you will be treating this as another hurdle to leap over and put behind you.

Let us know how you are getting on and take care .....

    Luv Shirl xx

  • Not sure what I did in my past life - it must've been bad.  Anyway two days of injections so far.  He reckons I have been watching too many medical shows and that I hit him like a dart board..... It is easy - always wanted to be a nurse when I was little apparently!!!.  I will keep in touch whilst I am away - as best as I can.XLeonie

  • Gah, Leonie!  It's all happening at once for you, isn't it?!  Don't worry too much about the heparin injections -- they're pretty easy to give even if you've never done that before (it's a really short needle), and I'm sure the nurses/doctor will give you a demo, so ask lots of questions if you have them.

Good luck with the trip to Brisbane and let us know how you're doing.

  • Hi Leonie,

Sorry to hear about your news. Pleased that the roads are open for you now. I live out near Middlemount on a property and we have a house in Gracemere with tenants in it. Can imagine how you feel, and your husband.  Will be thinking about you.

  • Hi Leonie

So sorry to hear about your husband's misfortune seems so unfair with everything that is going on your treatment , flooding etc. If he is having clexane it works quite quickly on the clotting I was given some when I had my mastectomy and was responsible for my 3rd surgery for a haematoma. The blood tests continue until the warfarin has kicked in and his INR is in a therapeutic range then they will ease off.

Good luck with everything. If you are staying in Brisbane I am only 25kms away if you need a coffee break away from the hospital.
