Double or Single Mastectomy

Hi all, yesterday got the verdict to have my r breast removed, but I'm thinking, should I go all out & have both removed hopefully  not having any re occurrence. Has anyone here made that decision? Just wondering.

  • Hi there
I had a double mastectomy and DIEP flap reconstruction 12 months ago .
My main reason was I didn’t want the anxiety of worrying if it would come back in the other breast ( my breast cancer surgeon said the odds for me were 10%).
Also you can only do the DIEP surgery once and I didn’t want implants.
It is a very personal decision and the argument that you shouldn’t touch a perfectly healthy breast is a valid one too.
I am very comfortable with my decision.
If you are looking at reconstruction stories ask you join the Choosing Breast Reconstruction private group on here and also look at the Reclaim Your Curves website.

  • Your oncologist may be able to advise of the potential for further cancer in your other breast. My decision (single mastectomy) was in part influenced by my oncologist’s view, that any further cancer might as easily be elsewhere in my body, than in my remaining breast.
  • If you are a real worrier then go for the double.  Of course your decision re reconstruction or not is a factor in your decision.  Many ladies here have gone the double and many are happy with the single.
  • If you put this topic into the search line above you will find discussion

Did your surgeon say you need a double as some are reluctant to remove a healthy breast

    Best wishes with your treatment
