I'm glad I've taken my time to think this over and not rush into anything. I'm meeting with my surgeon in a few weeks to have a chat. I'll let you know how I go

Hi Robyn, I am an 'older' woman too :) and loved the opportunity of having no breasts that bounce around and get in the way.  Unfortunately I carry a lot of weight on the tummy so look like I am 12mths pregnant and the flat chest isn't helping at all.  It looks absolutely awful.  But I do hate the prothesis as well as they become way too hot for me and also means that I have to wear a bra everytime I go out even in the yard.  Thought I would try the adhesive smaller prothesis, if I can ($$$). Also not sure how the adhesive goes against the skin, the sticky bandages and tapes on my left breast, while it is healing, leaves the skin red, itchy and sore.  Will try and research more of that side of it before I make a decision.  I hate making  decisions at the best of times let alone now.

Also just read the research paper re: Breast Reconstruction and was blown away by the fact that in 2003 it  showed that only 8% of Australian women who had mastectomies had breast reconstructions.  Go figure!

I am going through very much the same thing.  I elected to have my right breast excised in July 2013 due to BC.  At that stage I wanted the left breast removed as well but the public hospital system wouldn't do it.  (Would've thought it would save them money) Then in January this year I had the left finally off, I was glad to have it finally done, as I did not go with the conventional therapies of chemo and radiation or Tamoxifen.  Thought I would better handle the surgery than these other therapies.  Fear of the left breast having BC was one of the major reason, but also to even out the 'look'.

Have been thinking about reconstruction but after the problems with my left breast surgery (had an infection and am still healing from that) I am not so sure I want to go down that track.  I don't like wearing bras in summer and thought perhaps of getting adhesive breast forms in a smaller size.  Not sure.  But if they work, it will negate the need for me to have reconstruction.  Anyone considering this option?  Thoughts?

Hope this helps.  I certainly haven't regretted having the left prophylactically removed, despite the infection.

First of all just let me say how brave i think you all are, and that I take my hat off to you!!! I can't ever imagine how any of you might be feeling? The surgeon suggested it to me about one but I would not even contemplate it, so I guess it is a personal decision that each must decide in there own lives? 

A friend of mine who had three surgeries due to BC and had one of her breasts removed, decided after 11 years to finally have the reconstruction. I felt so much admiration for her as she had a lot of emotional issues because of BC overall. Lorna told me that when I was going through my cancer in 2011 and I was constantly talking to her about it, that it brought her own cancer journey home to her making the decision to go ahead a bit more obvious. My heart goes out to each and every one of you who are struggling with contemplating this issue or are having dramas after the fact. Please know that whatever you decide it is what you feel is best for you, and that my friends, is a precious thing to know it is right for you. As with my dear friend my admiration for you ladies means that I respect the courage it takes to do this and then go on with your lives not looking back.
