DO Say
Every now and then we see a conversation about all the weird and insensitive things that people sometimes say to people affected by breast cancer. What are some of the nicest, most supportive, loving...
My wonderful neighbour (after reading a book written by a journalist who had had bc) said, 'I get it now, it's never really over'. It touched me that she cared and wanted to understand more about my situation.
As time went on I felt that most people (not close family, luckily) just got on with their lives and never gave a thought about what it was like for me (and my hubby and daughters) to still be going through everything months down the track. I wish people had just contacted a bit more and simply let me know they were still thinking of me. My husband and daughters would have appreciated the same. We all felt quite alone and abandoned after the first month or two.
Rather than friends and extended family, our best support and most regular contacts were our neighbours. We had all just moved to the street as it was a new development and everyone was (and still are) just so friendly and caring. Feel very fortunate to have such a great little community. Not one of them has ever said anything I thought was weird or insensitive. Got to appreciate that!! Deanne xxx
