Delayed Reaction to Chemo

Hi Girls,

Well that'll teach me for breezing through my 12 week stint on Paclitaxel....I'm having a delayed reaction to it....who knew?!

I'm a few days shy of being finished my 6 months on chemo this Friday. The 1st 2 weeks after I finished, I started having a burning sensation in my thighs, although I wasn't doing anything different, I just thought my body was stressed & working on getting back to normal. Week 3 saw the neck & upper arms start to burn, the swelling in my hands & the neuropathy return. NYE I went to see my Oncologist only to find out it's the reaction to Taxol I didn't get while I was on it! Now my hands hands have come to the party & my thumbs & fingers are hurting. At least now I can take nurofen.

Has anyone else had this happen? Apparently, it's not uncommon. I was told to expect it to last 3-6 months :P

  • What a pain Sam (pardon the pun ) ; especially when you are now ready to put that behind you and get on with your surgeries ( and holiday !!). I'm too soon into the chemo, no neuropathy yet ...guess that's another joy that might be up ahead ... Did your Oncologist have any suggestions to use with the neurofen? I Think Vit B is good for nerves in general . And maybe it's a good excuse to have really nice whole body massage ...shift some of those built up toxins .... Might not change it but might make you feel better :) X Karen
  • Hi Sam, I had a terrible burning feeling in the balls of my feet when I stood for too long. As I had a recurrence it was not too bad first time around, but second time quite bad. especially after chemo finished. I spoke to a medical oncologist at the BCNA conference I attended in 2012 and she said the chemo has a cumulative effect in your body, hence the more chemo I had had, the worse it got. It did eventually subside. I actually started to wear really ugly(but really comfy) joggers to work. Luckily I wear long pants and got a black pair of joggers so hopefully weren't too noticeable! Not sure what you can do with your thighs etc. hopefully with your upcoming surgery you will get to rest plenty and that might help. Take care. Paula :)
