I'm glad for you that hey have the results back so quickly for you! Thinking in terms of a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy, once they remove "all" the breast tissue, there is a less than 10% chance of BC occurring. When I say "all" it is becuse they cannot be 100% sure they have got all the tissue, hence to other percentage. BUT results on this type of surgery speak for themselves. I sent an email to my surgeon yesterday after replying to you, asking generally about her experiences with reoccurence after a bilateral in non-cancerous tissue and she was very positive! She has only had two patients in her 30 years of practising that have come back with secondaries and she feels that is because they were older patients who had the initial mastectomies over 20 years ago, before they knew to remove the tissue that extends to the armpit. She, in her own experiences, has never had a patient return a postive cancer screen after the prophylactic mastectomy. She also said that if there is no cancer cells present at the time of the mastecomy there is no reason to believe that cancer resulting for breast tissue will appear elsewhere in the body. Saying that, it is a big step and one that is going to involve a lot of discussions for you, and your family, with a well qualified and experienced surgeon. It is something that is very invasive and quite traumatic on the person, physically as well as mentally. On the plus side - no more mammograms....that's got to be a relief... :O) I would say that even though this is the info that my surgeon gave me, I would urge you to find a surgeon you can trust, make a list of questions and work through them. Read as much as you can, there are so many sources of information dealing with BC on the internet these days and use as many resources as you can to find the answers you need.
Until you get the results, take a breath, relax with a glass (or 2 or 3) of that red wine and enjoy time with your beautiful boys and husband. Make sure they help you around the house so it helps with your stress levels, and yelling to relieve stress/tension is not a bad thing. Your family loves you and will understand that Mummy is having a hard time. Don't let other people's judgements hurt you. Easy said, I know I trouble doing that with my MIL, she puts the fear of god in me!! But remember to take time out for yourself, if the in-laws are getting to be too much, have a deep smell of those gorgeous flowers your friends sent, go have a lay down, take a walk or do whatever you enjoy to relax.
Thinking of you and I hope the weekend flies by for you... Ree xxx
