Hi
I am the same age and have also recently been diagnosed with breast cancer except mine was a triple negative.
Deciding between a lumpectomy and a mastectomy is such a personal, individual decision where so many factors need to be considered and weighed up - all in consultation with your surgeon. Factors to be considered, in my opinion, include the size of the tumour, whether it is in the lymph nodes, whether the surgeon believes a lumpectomy will get it all, the type of breast cancer and chances of it recurring, follow up treatment etc.
My tumour was small - 1.8cm - and my surgeon believed that a lumpectomy was sufficient. So I chose that option. And luckily, surgery was successful, he believes he got it all and no sign of it in the lymph nodes. But again, everyone is different.
If there is a high chance of it recurring then perhaps a mastectomy is an option. I am going to have a genetics test next month to see if I have inherited the mutated BRCA gene and if I have then a mastectomy is an option I will consider to stop it from coming back.
Good luck with the decision. Just remember to weigh everything up, ask the surgeon's opinion, etc.
