Hi everyone, it has been a long time since my operation on 1st July which went very well and I did actually have the full DIEP reconstruction, so no muscle removed. Had a great plastic surgeon and very happy with the overall size and shape of my breast. Just wanted to share my experience in the hope that it can help others out there facing the same dilemma that I had. I did not find that the surgery on the breast and abdomen was particularly painful since I was mostly numb and after a week in hospital only had pain relief for a few days. I had discomfort more than anything and had to sleep on my back for the first couple of months. The most uncomfortable thing for me was the heat blanket in hospital which I found to be unbearable. Unfortunatley after the operation it was discovered that I had a tiny bit of cancer in my sentinel node and not just DCIS but some invasive cancer in the breast tissue. Further surgery to remove my other nodes and did have some pain from this. 4 months on and I am back at work, feeling tired but healing well. I still have some discomfort in the abdomen but breast is ok other than an area of hardness which I hope will soften in the next months. Also forgot to mention the pulmonary embolisms that developed despite having stockings on, heparin injections and calf pumps in hospital but 10 hours on the operating table could have done this. I consider myself to be very lucky having been diagnosed so early and fortunate that mammograms are offered to ladies over 40 in this country. Without this I would not have known about my DCIS and could have been facing something much worse in the future. Still apprehensive about what the future holds but will face whatever comes my way. Hoping to have my ovaries removed next year and just on Zoladex at the moment until then. Good luck to everyone out there going through their own journeys
