I am currently waiting for a reconstruction in the public system. I was sure I did not want it done after my mastectomy in 2010 but they say time heals and 2 of my BC friends recently underwent reconstruction and have seen such a positive change in both of them that I have decided to go for it! Thanks goodness the waiting lists in Brisbane are very long! It took 18 months to get an appointment and now I am on a Cat 2 waiting list which officially should be 90 days but I know it will be at least 365 days! that's fine by me. One resource which I found very helpful was a DVD by the cancer council about reconstruction very helpful and they showed lots of pictures of the actual procedures. It was good for my husband as he had no idea what it was going to look like. I feel well prepared and supported in my decision. I can only have this method due to radiation and not enough flesh/ muscle for a lat dorsi, also I am an active Dragon boat paddler and a Lat Dorsi would put me out of action possibly for ever!
