Hi again Karene,
No, I have had no problems with my tummy. I actually play indoor beach volleyball twice each week and I run twice most weeks too! If my tummy wasn't strong enough, I'm sure I wouldn't be doing that :)
The scars are a constant reminder but they also make me aware of how strong I have been to go through it.... I was first diagnosed with DCIS in 2003 and had a mastectomy on my left side, together with a TRAM reconstruction. It wasn't done in the same operation (unlike the plan) because I had a reaction to something in the mastectomy op and ended up in ICU! I had the reconstruction done about 4 months later. The TRAM wasn't actually as bad as I thought it was going to be. I have a nice flat tummy now which is a bonus! and the scar is basically on your bikini line so I DO wear a bikini!!
In 2010 I was diagnosed again but this time it was invasive ductal carcinoma so I had another mastectomy, lat dorsi reconstruction and then had to have chemo. I finished all of my chemo on 29th Dec 2010 but am still having ops for the reconstruction side of things. My implant moved around and as a result I ended up having it replaced twice! I just came out of hospital last week after my third op. Hopefully this is the last one!! I found that the problem with the lat dorsi reconstruction is that the implant feels really foreign. When I lie on my side or my stomach, the TRAM side feels normal but the Lat Dorsi side feels like I am lying on a rock. I never feel comfortable. I also get funny twitches in the lat dorsi muscle that is moved to the front....the back area also sometimes feels a bit weird.
So basically I have no realy problems at all from the TRAM but all my problems are from the Lat Dorsi!!
Hope this helps,
Louise
