Chinese Medicine

for those who use Chinese Medicine. My friend who believes strongly in Chinese Medicine came over last night and showed us how to make this great healthy soup (well I call it soup anyway, lol) to eat twice a day. I blogged on this on my site & a few of you have showed some concerns. I asked my Onc the other day & she said some natural remedies / Chinese medicine / Vitamins. are ok to take, some airnt. I asked if I can stay on my regular multi vitamin a day and she said yes. She also said yes to eating ginger to stop nausea as she thinks its a great idea. Some things can change how the Chemo works, like alot of intake of Vitamin C. She said that if I'm taking things to help with side effects it should be ok. If Im using Chinese Medicine to cure myself best wait until after Chemo. Does that make sense? What is everyone elses experiences ?
The Chinese Herbs I'll be having are Chinese Yam, Gorgon fruit, Job's Tears,
Chinese brown sugar, Sesame Seeds. Can anyone help me?

  • I have only just started my chemo journey - Session 2 completed Thursday

The pharmacist who does my meds explained that the high antioxidants can interfere with the ability of the chemo to attach to the cancer cells, therefore taking vitamin c during chemo is not a great idea.  I still take calcium and vitamin B from day 4 until my next chemo (10 days).  I also use green tea with ginger slice, apple cider vinegar  with a  drop of honey to help the nausea.

I have been "juicing" since I was diagnosed with my TNBC. It makes me feel better - the juice is one that I found in an cancer survivors book - beetroot, carrot, celery and sometimes kale.  I order organic produce (delivered to the door as I cant get out at the moment) and just eat small amounts of what I feel like every 2 hours.  Tumeric  and curcumin are supposed to be great cancer fighters so I incorporate these into meals when I can.

My oncologist has no problem with complementary therapy as long as I discuss it with him and the pharmacist  prior to use.

  • Hi, well I did take a few things while having chemo, but told my oncologist beforehand. I ate some homebrand.. ginger nut biscuits at times to prevent nausea. It seemed to work. I also had some noni juice ; a couple of bottles I recall. I took some " immune boosting " tabs from a naturopth. I like to eat " seasonal foods " and variety of herbs and spices..listen to the body, and what it needs.

Reflection and quiet times also may help. Too much stress does not help, I think. Also have a " laugh " daily if you can !

Interestingly, I stumbled on this recently....

  • Hi Annie (& A big wave to all the BCNA-ers)

    Thanks for the info....

    Will keep u updated!

  • Hi Merylee,

Interesting to read about the 'soup' your friend made! Your oncologist is certainly right that some things like vitamin C can interfere with your breast cancer treatment. We recently updated the information on our website that discusses this topic, which you may want to check out. It's great to know that you're speaking to your oncologist about this - I really think that's the way to go.

Also interesting to read about the ginger, and I'd love to know how that works out for you.

Love and wishes from all the BCNA-ers

    Annie
