Chemotheraphy during post Expander Recon

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with BC late August 2014, had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biobsy a week later in my right breast. Results came in and I had DCIS, stage 2 so a mestectomy was recommended.

I had the mastectomy on 30th September with an expander inserted. After 8 days in hospital I commenced my first Hyperbaric treatment which 10 were to be completed to assist in the healing.

My first Chemo, FEC, then commenced 3 weeks after my mastectomy, it is now 4mths following the mastectomy and I had my last Chemo session 3 weeks ago, the problem is I'm not healing, I have sebacious fluid coming from a  hole which is not healing up and was wondering if anyone else has or did have the same problems with the healing?

I'm due to go back to my Breast surgeon in a couple of days and I'm very worried that he will be required to remove the expander and that I will have to go through this terrible ordeal once again.

He has already had to cut around the hole and joined the skin together with 6 stiches after having to remove the saline from the expander, this procedure has still not rectified the situation :-(

    Hi Vanessa, what an ordeal. The diagnosis, ongoing treatment and expander trouble all the way along. I wish I had the answers for you. A good place to ask specific reconstruction questions is in the Breast Reconstruction Online Group. You may be able to connect with a member there who has experienced something similar, for some people the healing is troublesome and can take a longer time to come good. With the battering of chemo over your body might now have a better chance to recover.
