Chemo side FX!

I have learnt a few things about Chemo side FX.  I would like to share them with you...

1. Get  a GOOD relationship with your local GP.  They can prescribe:-

  • antibiotic creams for infected skin rashes- numerous- perineum from my toxic urine to hair follicles.
  • Nilstat for Thrush which is always a hassle
  • Antibiotics should you need them
  • Blood tests to check up on you from time to time.
  • Referral to a Psychologist, on Medicare: when I was falling apart at the start of the treatment.etc
  • Sleeping pills for the dreaded insomnia

2. Naturopathic stuff helps hugely with Chemo problems.

  • Protein shakes are great- highly recommend them for keeping up your energy levels.Use Pea protein plus lots of other stuff like Linseed Sunflower Almond (LSA) nut mix, linseed oil and Acai seeds etc. put into rice milk or almond milk along with fresh fruits like berries and whizz with a stab blender. Ice cubes help to make it more palatable. Minimum of once  a day, more if you can handle it.
  • Zinc needs to be replenished so take high doses of Zn for taste buds- what are those?
  • Vitamin B- high dose, with  a full meal , never after 5pm
  • Scottish Thistle (Legolon) for liver function- your liver is in overload with Cytotoxic drugs.  (Take away from the Chemo time period.)
  • Digestive tract is knocked out so lots of Polybac or active acidopholous (keep in fridge) for healthy gut.  It does make  a difference.
  • No coffee or alcohol- it all tastes  like crap anyway.
  • Ribraxx- shiitake mushroom and rice bran enzyme powders.  Not cheap, but it is used in Japan as a normal adjunct to Chemotherapy
  • Vitamin D- boost if possible.D3 drops are good.
  • Turmeric- organic: good for digestion

Over to you.  I hope this helps. I paid a fortune for Naturopathic stuff but if it works what the heck. Your health is worth it quite frankly!

The treatments are hideous, but we all trust they are for the greater good. To me it is like using atomic warfare to kill a fly...but so be it.  We cannot look back, only forwards. Certainly it is safe to say that they have refined the use of Chemo drugs greatly in the last 20 years.  Thank Goodness. I hate to think what it was like back then.

  • Thank you for your kind words of caution Leonie. Wise words indeed. All the treatment has been OK'd with both the Oncologist and my GP.  I do not think I could have survived without using the Naturopathic protein shakes etc. It gave me a lifeline when I felt that I was drowning.

I am a 'one day at a time' person now.  A bit like AA without the alcohol...

I still resent this taking over my life.  Not easy to deal with at any time. My heart goes out to all of you in far worse situations than myself.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks for your kind advice  Kathy.  I did indeed run all this stuff past both my GP and the Oncologist. They are  fully cognisant of what I am taking and why it has been prescribed.

As far as I know there are no contra indications for the Vitamins that I am taking. I will double check the Vitamin C.

    I appreciate your feedback.

  • Hi Chris,  I read your blog with interest and a big hint of caution.  Yes everyone is different and I agree with Kathy about checking with your Physician or GP.  I personally chose not to take anything whilst on chemo (only the drugs that were prescribed for me to stop the nausea and of course the antibotics that were intravenously administered plus the neutolasta to assist my blood count)  I figured that I would use natural supplements once the chemo "had done it s job".  I do agree with you that the treatment 20 years ago must have been hideous and I reckon that in another 20 years people will wonder why on earth today's treatment was so harsh.  But what else do we have? I also agree that we all have to look forward - onwards and upwards. I say!!!! Take care XLeonie
