I went private for my surgery. I waited a month from my first appointment to the surgery. I might’ve waited longer if I hadn’t expressed my concerns to the practice manager. They did think I had DCIS though, and it was low grade.
Then, my surgeon wanted to do another minor surgery 2 weeks after my major one. I had a slight fever on the day, so it was postponed for another 2 weeks. Then, I had anxiety over it and postponed it again. I kept asking my surgeon to do the radiation first because I was worried, and he just said the radiation was not as important as the minor surgery. I finally changed surgeons, and ended up having radiation 3 months post major surgery.
Every case is different, every doctor is different. We have to trust we’re being looked after properly, and be pushy if we feel things are taking too slow. However, we need to remember that things don’t happen overnight just because it’s cancer. And in the majority of cases, the cancer doesn’t grow that quickly anyway. If you’ve had the surgery, that’s what should’ve taken all the cancer out and you should be cancer free. Radiation is to kill any cells that might be remaining locally. It’s an in case, to be double sure, so don’t be too stressed about the time delay. If you’re still worried however, call the hospital and ask if they can speed things up.
