Chemo done and dusted

I have finally finished my 6 months of chemo treatments yesterday, (AC and then Taxol) and I am feeling so excited (feeling tired and nauseous from the chemo) but I am so glad that the treatment is over.  I now have about 4 weeks break until radiation starts so hopefully, my poor old body will recover a bit before then.  I am turning 50 in a couple of weeks so hopefully, I will build up a bit of energy to enjoy my Birthday.  Another hurdle done.  Woo hoo.

  • Hi Hazel,

It is a relief.  It was a slow 6 months in one way, but went quickly in other ways.

Thank you for your best wishes and it is onwards and upwards.

Good luck with the rest of your treatment.  It is such a grueling process.

  • Hi Dianna

My chemo experience hasn't been all bad.  I had AC firstly (4 doses every 3 weeks) and I always drink heaps of water before I get to chemo, during chemo and after chemo.  It is good to flush the nasties out of the body.  I rested a lot and usually felt fairly ordinary for the first week and then really tired for the next two weeks.  I ate really well, drank ginger beer, ginger tea, ate lots of fruit tingles (good for nausea), brushed my teeth and used mouth wash at least four times a day (I used Biotene as it is very gently but good for bacteria), tried to walk when I wasn't feeling too bad etc.

It is horrible when you lose your hair even though you know it is going to happen.  I had mine cut short before my treatment but was still devastated when it feel out almost 3 weeks to the day after my first treatment.  Be prepared!  I cried briefly, got the clippers out and shaved the rest off.  I felt better then.

The taxol was a little more gruelling for me.  Again I did all of the above.  The nausea is not so bad but I did get numbness in my feet, aches in my legs and usually crashed on day 3 and 4.  I would then recover ready for the next dose.  I guess it is all common sense as far as what you eat and your hygiene.  Thankfully, I didn't miss one treatment and never ended up in hospital.

You also need to keeping "living" so I feel that social engagements are important for mental health. I always said yes to everything and if I made it then that was fine and if I wasn't feeling up to it, I just didn't go.

Also, learn to say yes to help.  It is so important.

Message me if you need any support, I am happy to help.

    Good luck.

P.S.  Thank you for my birthday wishes.

  • Hi Julie,

I am sure my birthday celebrations will be great.  I just have to get through the next few days and then I should be fine.  Thank you.  I will celebrate as best I can.
