Chemo Black and Virgin Hair!!
So you may have guessed I work with some great gals and am lucky enough to have an amazing husband but this week was special.
It all started with a little trip to the hospital for Chemo session in 1. How was I to know the day would be a collaborative effort between hubby and my boss on so many fronts.. Here I was thinking to was all about me.
While finding out I had breast cancer wasn't the greatest news I've ever heard, knowing that my hubby who is a Crohns sufferer wouldn't just automatically be well while I was sick was a little daunting. The amazing strength he has shown through some stressful days makes me love him all the more. Chemo day 1 was a classic case. Stress and Crohns is not a great mix on any day so the night before my first session he had strained and barely slept. I decided the next day we didn't both need to be unwell and that he should rest and I would go to Chemo and just see how it goes.. If I wasn't well enough to get myself home I would call him. He was so shattered he agreed but I was only a half hour away when the phone buzzed to say" no we are in this together " I'm on my way... Tears ensued.. Doh!!! He always makes me do that!!!! Anyway as we live an hour from the hospital I arrived to find my boss, sitting on the waiting room for me.. I'm not joking both these people run busy businesses and they were both coming to sit with me.. It was incredible! So the boss and I started the early stages of the day... Lucking out it was a quiet day at the ward and the good seats were available we slotted in and set up camp.. What would the day hold? Two clearly experienced nurses were at the helm.. Clear instructions of what was going on and plenty more info on side effects or not...... A cannula popped in and we laughed at copious amounts of blood flowing from my arm, telling nurse G she was the newbie (this was seriously not the case) which she took in great humour and we were off... Of course that's just all a lead up as they flush and give pre meds... So nerves just weren't a factor at that stage.. Oooops almost forgot the real stuff was coming soon. Ok now we hear that black nails are the go to keep the light out of your nails.. Like a bullet, Boss is off to the pharmacy to get the black lacquer and within minutes I have suitably gothic hands. Hubby arrives and we seem well prepared to start.. Its like its been orchestrated and the next hour of me getting Chemo no 1 flys by thankfully with no complications. The conversation between hubby and boss though seems somewhat surreal... Are they seriously discussing where to buy wigs and whether tattooing eyebrows while going through Chemo is a good thing? NurseS thought probably not so good! You betcha they are and after that they launch into retail fashion store discussions which leads to a new range of Chemo Black nail polish being manufactured.. OMG.. That boy is a a character.. A few minutes later and a new bottle is designed on the side table in the Chemo room... Seriously had I not been hooked up to the machine I think we may have all just walked out of there so excited with ourselves and forgotten what we were meant to be doing. Woweee the time has flown and I'm so grateful they came.. Just didn't think I would want anyone sitting there with me and be better left to a quiet day but they have made it fun and I really can't thank them enough.. Hubby is now fading badly and boss gets a call to say the kids are crook so they are sent off and thanked for their crazy antics and time passing efforts.. They have done a good thing today. It's quiet now and I just have a last flush to get through so its nice to take it in a little and just dwell on stuff.. But not too much. I leave with some anticipation of what the next week will hold but whatever it is I can tell you today was special and if I can just remember to laugh through some of this stuff then I know it's all going to be fine. So it's been 6 days now and I am going great. Hilariously yesterday hubby insisted we go to the wig shop and look at options so we are ready.. Yep two Virgos !! He is so amazed and excited at the look of the wigs he decides we need to get it then and there... Shoot those things are expensive but we have named mine Shinade..( I'm sure I'm not the first )ha ha and she will sit proudly when the day comes to pop her on. Although I think he may be more excited than I at the wig prospect it's so lovely he was there..so that's my week, chemo black nails from my boss and Virgin Hair ( apparently that's the colour) wigs from my hubby. Last night we went to the staff party and to top it all off all the girls from the office came with their nails painted black.. I'm naming Decjuba because that's where they are from and I feel incredibly lucky to be around these people.. Sometimes you just don't realise the extent of their amazingness...
But enough from me... I'll let you know how week 2 goes, hoping that all the pink ladies are feeling strong this week and laughing at something.. Even if it's he thought of my very blokey hubby chatting wigs and nails.. Take care.. LMA
