Checkup

Hello ladieees :):) Well this morning I had my  checkup with my surgeon.I am just going into my 3 rd year since diagnosis, and I see my surgeon every 6 months and my oncologist the other times.I almost cancelled the visit, because I really felt that it was just a lot of money for a few minutes, and I feel really well.He chatted for a minute or two, then checked my scar line. Then he checked my lymph nodes on the side that I had my mastectomy. He said' there are several soft lymph nodes, that I would like to get an ultrasound on.How are you feeling generally?' At this point I could actually feel tears welling up! I swallowed hard and said,'I feel really healthy'.He said, let's just get the ultrasound, and if there is anything suspicious looking, they will do a biopsy on the spot.In this case, come back to me 2 or 3 days after and we will discuss the results. If there is nothing, they will tell you,and then I just want you to come back to me in 8 weeks. We will keep an eye on this.I am thinking "On what ?!?!?" . It's the same old story right? We will never really get totally away from the fact that we had BC.I feel sure it's nothing, but I have to wait until next Friday to find out. This really made me think about the importance of regular checkups though.I have become quite complacent lately with lots of things, like my diet, stress etc.In the early days I was so conscious of doing the right thing by ME,but things have slipped a bit. This brings me right back to where I was ,very quickly!! So if any of you ladies are having second thoughts about doctors visits, don't even consider not going.Hope everyone is doing ok:):) Cheers Robyn.xox

  • Oh Robyn

you poor thing. It's so bloody stressful. I don't think we are ever looked at by the medical profession the same once we've had cancer. Not a bad thing that they are being so thorough but no one has come up with a strategy for dealing with the bloody stress and anxiety that goes along with it. I'm so glad you didn't put off seeing the doctor. The good news is that you feel really healthy. I will be sending positive thoughts your way whilst you wait for your results.

Deanne, good luck for your results too. You are so right when you say how distressing it is to see so many newby's.

Im going through something similar AGAIN! I had to see the gyno yesterday as I have had some pain and post menopausal bleeding. I am booked in next Wednesday to have a d&c and hysterscope. Considering I am in the public system, this is amazingly quick. although I am outwardly calm this time (I've had 2 scares in the 5 months since I finished treatment) I'd be lying if I said the anxiety wasn't there. My advice is to think positive, keep busy and keep telling yourself that everything is fine. Now, time for me to take my own advice. Lol. Good luck girls. Karen xox

  • Hi Robyn,

Oh I feel sad for you to have this cloud over your head after 3 years. I suppose on the positive your surgeon is covering all bases to make sure he is on top of anything. I will keep everything crossed for you. Go and do something special for yourself that makes you happy. Sending lots of hugs your way.

    Cheers Jen ?? ?? x

  • Hi Robyn, I'm crossing my fingers for you too that all will be OK. Sometimes it does feel like you can never quite escape bc, but I guess the good thing is that the close monitoring means that any issue is picked up really quickly and like Rowdy says, they are being extra careful, which is also a good thing.

I'm just having a bit of "scanxiety" at the moment; got my regular oncologist check tomorrow - which I was toying with cancelling - but reading your post has confirmed for me that I need to go :-)

Will be keeping you in my thoughts, Jane xx

  • Hey Robyn

Try and focus on staying positive. Keep yourself busy so that your mind doesnt wonder towards negative stuff. I have my oncologist and surgeon appointments next week but am flat chat at work and on the homefront so will deal with them on the day. Its great that your doc is cautious and checking everything better than being complacent . Worrying achieves nothing.

Sending heaps of positive thoughts your way.??

  • Hi Robyn it is crap for you, sometimes the waiting is as stressful as the results. The mind starts to wander and we think the worst. Fingers and toes crossed for you and think positive that the doctor is just being extra carefulxx

  • Thank-you Summer. Yes I check in every so often and it is lovely to see the network working well and everyone supporting each other. Sad that there are so many new faces, so many more ladies facing all this, but great that they can get support on here. Deanne xxx

  • Hi Robyn,

All the best for the ultrasound results.  I guess we will never feel like we are 'out of the woods'.  Two years is such a major achievement and I hope the results come back good for you.

    Karen xx

  • Hi Robyn

I am very sad to read your post and hope it turns out that everything is OK for you.

Yes, it is easy to become complacent, thinking the dollars can be better spent somewhere else, and not attend those 6 monthly appointments.  This is a wakeup call for me - an probably many others.

You will be in my thoughts.

    Summer  :-)

    Hello Deanne

Lovely to see you are still checking in !  Good luck with your bone scan, too.

    Summer  :-)

  • Hi Robyn

So sorry you have to go through this. Keeping my fingers crossed that all is ok and your doctor is just being thorough. You are so right though about keeping up with follow-up appointments.

It is nerve wracking when you have to have this sort of thing. I have to have a bone scan tomorrow because of a potential stress fracture in my foot. Staying very busy to stop the mind wondering too far into the dark. One step at a time. Will be thinking of you and hoping your ultrasound shows everything is ok. Deanne xxx
