Cellulitis

I have lymphoedema as a result of axilliary clearance and radiotherapy and recently have been diagnosed with breast cellulitis. I'm not sure how I got the infection but was hospitalised and placed on IV penicillin 2 days before I was scheduled to go on a holiday to Uluru. I would just like to give encouragement to others who may have this dreaded outcome following a lumpectomy. I've found it difficult to exercise with lymphoedema and was having regular lymphatic drainage prior to my infection. Well I was discharged from hospital the night before my early morning flight to Alice Springs yet had an amazing holiday. I managed a 9k walk round the base of Uluru then completed a strenuous 6k walk up Kings Canyon. I was very proud of my achievements and the experience thoroughly lifted my spirits. The staff at the hospital pulled out all stops to get me on my way for my holiday and were very encouraging with helping me make the deadline. I will be on oral antibiotics for some weeks to come before the infection clears and hope my story will give hope to others who find their illnesses often threatening the possibility of keeping well made plans Regards Inpink xx
  • Hi Julie The radiation added to my lymphoedema, so be sure to visit a Physio who can do manual lymphatic drainage who will give you all the encouragement and support to hopefully minimise your risk. It doesn't happen to everyone. I'm so pleased my Physio gave me much support in order to achieve my goals despite my problems. I wish you luck. Regards Inpink xx
  • Hi Inpink, great to hear that no BC or any other hurdle was going to stop you going on your holiday. It's great to hear that you had a great time at Uluru and did those fantastic walks. That's another thing I worry about is getting Lympoedema. I also had lymph nodes removed 20/20 and was told that radiation may bring it on. Keeping fingers crossed when radiation starts. Glad to hear as well that you are now on the mend. Julie xx
