Forum Discussion
Hi Louie, interesting article. I'd agree that the first meeting with the breast surgeon is an important time to discuss whether immediate reconstruction is possible, and if not, what are the options for reconstruction down the track. I was lucky that my GP had talked to me about reconstruction before referring me on to my breast surgeon and so I was fully prepared to discuss what my options were. My breast surgeon was very open to discussing it, but as it turned out, I did have to wait until after all treatments to have my reconstruction, but at least the conversation was on the table and my surgeon referred me to a great plastic surgeon once I was ready to move ahead.
I guess the point of my comment is that women should be given all the options at the very beginning so that they can weigh up what is right for them and be actively involved in the decision-making. I know that some women are not given the benefit of this conversation (perhaps because of the surgeon's assumption that they would not want to go down the reconstruction path), but at the very least that should be a choice the woman herself makes.
