Breast Pain
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to ask a quick question regarding pain in my boob. I have sharp pain in my nipple, sometimes a burning pain, even wakes me out of my sleep. I did not experience it before diagnosis or during treatment, just after the radiation finished (30 cycles) six weeks ago.
I get other pains but that is usually in the scars, so I can imagine that is nerve damage?
I saw a breast surgeon at the Public Hospital, not the one who did my operation but another one, same old crap. He dismissed it with "pain is normal".
I went to my GP, who felt everything and said all feels okay, no swelling. I have a radiation oncologist appointment in ten days, should I just wait till then, he is the best of the team who treated me.
Or should I make an appointment with the actual breast surgeon? I have a referral to her private rooms instead of the public hospital.

- thanks Flaneuse, I still have my breast and nipple only had a WLE. I didn't have it before, just since radiation.
I've wondered if it was due to the blue dye injected in the nipple because it is still blue 4 months later or maybe that my nipple was fried. I am going to try to forget about it and ask the radiation oncologist next week, as he is the best at explaining things. Better than a useless "pain is normal" response.
It is comforting to hear so many others have these random pains, so thankyou for answering :) - I have occasional stabs and jabs in my right breast, which had excisions, and occasional stabs where the nipple used to be on the left where I have no more breast - like phantom pains. I asked one of the surgeons (not mine) about it and he said "We know it happens but we don't know why."
- Oh thanks Kez, I'm feeling so much better about the nipple pain, it seems to happen to a lot of ladies. I will stop freaking out and see my radiation oncologist next week :)
- Three years down the track and the bloody thing still hurts at times. Had the nipple pain after radiation for a long time on and off. Hmmph I guess they just don't like being operated on and nuked. :)

- I had a lumpectomy in July 2017 after I had Radiation treatment and have been on tamoxifen ever since
For the last month I have painful nipple and breast
I am terrified my cancer has come back I am seeing my GP on Wednesday
My scans were clear in June unfortunately there is no guarantees in this insidious disease
Stork - Thanks lovely, it is amazing how a word or two from others who have been there and experienced the same thing can relieve the anxiety!
- If it helps, I had all sorts of pains for over 2 years while my breast was healing (lumpectomy & radiation). It's most likely nothing, but its still best to get it checked if you are worried at all :smile:
- Thanks for the replies girls, it helps put the brain at rest, got enough going on up there. I finished radiation mid July but the pain in my nipple did not start until last month. I had the usual pain in the two scars after surgery but it's the nipple one that bothers me. I will take your advice and wait to see the radiation oncologist as I was pretty burnt and my boob was super itchy after 30.
- I had sharp persistent stabbing pains in my boob after my radiation - and they said 'that was fairly normal'. How long ago did you have your rads? Your Rad Onc appointment may be able to answer some of your questions more accurately than the BS you've just seen (who didn't do your surgery!)
