I have recently been advised that I have the BRACA2 gene mutation.
I am planning to go through a hysterectomy and a double mastectomy for prevention.
Is there anyone that has been given the same diagnosis and having surgery or have had surgery already?
Hi Leanne - my name is Leanne and in Nov 2010 through testing because my Dad tested positive to BRCA 1 , I was diagnosed also BRCA 1 gene. I had a Oopharectomy in Feb 2011. The genetic people asked me what I wanted to do about my breasts and I told them I would watch and wait - keeping up with regular mammagrams. I had my scheduled one in Oct 2012 and on 13th Nov got a call from BreastScreen SA asking me to come in. After another mammagram and a biopsy they told me and my husband I have breast cancer. It was in my right breast and after discussions with my lovely surgeon due to BRCA 1 gene, we decided to have a bi-lateral mastectomy with immediate re-constuction with tissue expanders. Surgury was on 19th Nov 2012 and cancer was invasive ductal cancer - Stage 1 Grade 3 Triple Negative. I've had my chemo, hair has grown back and on 30th Nov, I had my tissue expanders removed and implants put in. I know BRCA 2 is said to be worse than BRCA 1 but if you can get lots of info from genetic people it should help you make some decissions. I am 49 now and healthy. Hi Leanne, I was diagnose with breast cancer at 49 and had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation.Then, because of the BRACA gene had a hysterectomy a year later.
Two years after that I had a bilateral mastectomy and tram flap reconstruction at the same time. I have never regreted having either surgery
My daughter has the same gene and at 29 was diagnosed with DCIS because she didn't want to go through chemo etc she decided to have a bilateral mastectomy and had spacer put in until she decided what kind (if any) of reconstruction.When her breast tissue was sent to pathology after her mastectomy she had an aggressive stage 3 breast cancer, She has finished her treatment and recinstruction and is now (at the age of 32) trying to decide whether to have a hysterctomy or an oopharectomy.
