Boobie Trap!

I regret getting my silicon lefty when I was still feeling shell shocked at having a mastecomy. What a rip off - does the fact that it cost $385 have anything to do with the $400 medicare rebate? Since purchasing my oversized hideous item, I have discovered there are now better shaped ones with air holes that are not so heavy - but I've done my dough - medicare wise for a couple of years.  If you can get one from online for USD $167-  why is it twice the price in an Australian department store? - someone seems to be cashing in!!  Especially at such a vulnerable time - it would be great if this site could give some more iformation about what is on the market and at what approx price before you are half naked in a change room feeling like you want the floor to just swallow you and hearing yourself say 'yes, that will be fine' when it' just NOT!

  • Great Idea.. it would feel good to support another woman in need and BCNA is a wide reaching network. Kx

  • After reading your posts,I just had a thought. What about BCNA collecting unwanted prosthesies and then offering them free(or small fee)to women who needed them but couldn't afford the up front payment for a new one.

  • Hi,I am also suffering with the really heavy one that I was fitted for, it does match the large breast on the other side but weighs so much, but I am getting double reconstruction on tuesday so looking forward to that.(not the operation bit though!)Does anyone know any organisations that collect unwanted prosthesis to give to say 3rd world countries??  Also the special bras, as my new breasts will be much smaller I think...thanks,Julia
  • Thanks Sarah 51,

Sounds like it really is worth shopping around - online seems to be the way to go!

  • HI Kay

I know what you mean about the cost of things when you enter a "specialised" area. Not only are the prosthesis expensive ( I have to say mine is great the lady who fitted it was fantastic) but then the bras are also that much more. Have delved into the internet and bought 2 lovely bras from the UK  plus a lovely mastectomy bikini which cost me 30 pounds I paid $120 for my costume ( it's lovely don't get me wrong) from Spirit of Life in Brisbane that's a big difference. Also the Amoena products in the UK are much cheaper there than here. They have a great range of Inbuilt mastectomy bras into singlets and t shirts which are 25 - 30 pounds (about $38 - $46) at Spirit of life they retail at about $70 when you try to order for overseas you can't and refer you to your local stockist in Australia! I have a lot of family in the UK so can see ways I can purchase them but what about everyone else ??

Just about swimming prosthesis it's great for the pool but it is cut away at the back of the prosthesis to allow the water to drain. I wouldn't wear mine on a daily basis unless I was on a beach holiday.

Think I'll get off my soap box now. Saw some nice bras on Ebay yesterday going back to browse!!

  • Sounds like you had a bad experience in the fitting room. It's very embarassing  and it takes a special, sensitive person to make you feel comfortable and fit you with the right size.I can't speak highly enough of the lady who helped me. I'm really happy with my silicon friend and infact, more uncomfortable without it. I also got fitted with the mastect. bras too.Do you think you got the wrong size? Could you take it back and swap sizes? It's alot of money for something you are not happy with.I wonder if the silicon"swimming" prosthesis is any lighter.I know it's cheaper-about $130.

  • Hi Kay - awful to read you are so disappointed by your 'oversized hideous' prosthesis, as a well fitted prosthesis actually looks pretty good.  Maybe you could consider talking with the manager of the retail outlet where you purchased your prosthesis.  They may be open to helping you, as it certainly isn't good advertising for them if you are really unhappy with your 'lefty'. Good luck.
