Bone density test

i just had a bone density test. What federal government dunderhead decided that you only get one free bone density test every five years after you turn 70???
Forget cancer! Bone density problems are most commonly age related, so at a time when people should be monitoring their bone density as a matter of course, we make tests more expensive for them?? A broken hip will cost a lot more to the medical system. The cost to me personally is not what rankles, it's the damn principle!!
Sigh. Now for act 2  - the bone density and femara for another 5 years debate!

  • @Afraser I agree.preventative care is a lot lighter on the Health Budget long term and also the individual.
  • I just think elderly people (not just those on medication known to have a negative effect) should be encouraged to have them at least every two years if there is any sign of deterioration. Preventative care. I am happy to pay for extra ones but not everyone finds that an easy option. Mine cost $130 and I have private health cover.
  • I agree with what has been said above plus add that the 6 monthly injection Prolia to help prevent bone loss is $275 per injection unless osteoporotic and over 70 OR osteoporotic and have had a osteoporotic fracture when the PBS price is available of $38. Doubly disappointing when there are known synergies with this drug and prevention of breast cancer recurrence.
  • You can at least pay fir one which is $75 here if wanting more frequently. I cannit blieve tamoxifen and ai...do not qualify as requiring screening ...yet prednisolone does.
  • Many thanks, still not convinced it's a good idea but at least those with a known problem can get one every two years!
