Blood clot around elbow

I am having a 10cm blood clot in deep vein around my elbow so I need to have blood thinner medication daily throughout my chemo treatment. Just wondering anyone on blood thinner throughout treatment have any complication or issues that I need to aware of? Thanks for your input.
  • @Locksley Thanks for the info. A lot of time we get undiagnosed. My story is the other way round I was complaining about my elbow sore though the sore comes and goes but the young Dr insist it's just inflammation of my elbow tendons. Till it shows sign of swelling and warm on the site that I went to see the senior Dr and straight away he referred me for ultrasound scan n it shows a 10cm blood clot from elbow upwards. Good to know that chest xray may not be able to tell blood clot. Thanks.
  • Yes I was unlucky to have blood clots form in my lungs and my heart.   Every time I saw a medical person I told them.  Chest xray showed nothing.   It was a young dr in emergency department that insisted I had a ct scan that showed it. I am so grateful he persisted.
  • @Locksley. Ic. Was your blood clot in your lungs? Does that mean you had chest xray and it didn't show it at all? I had occasional cough everyday but my chest xray shows nothing.
  • @Siewli I didnt know I had blood clots during chemo.  It was after chemo when I couldnt shake a cough for 10 weeks and had terrible shortness of breath it was diagnosed after many many tests and scans.    I started the clexane needles before radiation treatment, had radiation treatment continued on with cleaxane needles and then had blood thinning tablets after that.   All the treatment worked as the blood clots are now gone and I have finished taking the tablets.    Hope all goes well.  I just did what the doctors told me to do even though I felt like a pin cushion and was black and blue for months.
  • @Locksley Thanks. Do you stop your tablet once your blood clot clear up? Or you just keep taking the tablets for the duration of your chemo treatment?

  • @Siewli  tablets are much easier to take than clexane injections.   I had them twice a day for 8 months into my tummy. I had blood clots.   I was so black and blue and they hurt.  Then I went onto tablets for 12 months.   I dont believe they interfered with treatment.

  • @AllyJay..yes I was given an Clexane injection in the hospital when I was in ER. but now at home I was prescribed Apixaban tablets twice a day. I so worried about the side effects of those blood thinner med and  we are dealing side effect from chemo too. So stress.
  • Hi there @Siewli...Sorry about this pesky clot, I believe they're fairly common, even with people not already living with preexisting clotting conditions. I'm not sure what they've put you on, as you don't mention it in this post. If, as I suspect, it's Clexane injections, the advise I can give is that I found alternating sides on my Buddha Belly was less painful than the fatty part of the thigh. Also avoid any old pregnancy stretch marks or surgical scars on your tummy. take a good pinch and then a deep breath and jab the needle in an push the plunger. I was told not to use those surgical spirit wipes before or after as they can interfere with the medication, but as always, check with your nurse or doctor (or pharmacist). Good luck with your ongoing treatment.
