I chose a bilateral mastectomy because I was an F cup and I didn't like the idea of having to wear a balancing prosthesis or having reconstruction on one side and then a reduction on the other (because I didn't have enough tummy to build an F cup!).
I'm happy with my decision and like my new athletic body but the loss of my nipples still makes me cry sometimes.
Of course, I probably would have lost feeling on the 'good' side as a result of the surgery to reduce it anyway.
Least amount of surgery for the fastest possible recovery was my criteria. I accept that other women have different values and I agree with you about external concepts of beauty. I have a very dear friend who is naturally flat chested and it's been very interesting to hear her observations about language that suggests a flat chested woman isn't feminine or whole. Understandably, she finds that kind of assumption very offensive.
