What concerns me is that the whole issue surrounding "to reconstruct or not" is becoming an absolute mind field of how to talk about either option without offending anyone. The language that is used by women and medical professionals to "inform" others about their choices is often offensive to others who have made a different choice.
I may be an idealist but I would love to think that it is possible for all of us to have respect for the fact that all choices are valid without the need to "defend" our choice by being negative or just disrespectful about other choices.
It comes down to respect as far as I am concerned. Respect for everyone's right to make their own choice based on the latest medical information. Personally I have chosen not to reconstruct after a single mastectomy. I am happy with that choice and feel I was given all the information that I needed to feel ok with that.
It is a very individual and personal choice to have to make and I fully support everyone's right to be informed about all the options for their situation. What we should be aiming for in the statistics is not how many women have a reconstruction or not but how many women feel happy with their choice and the information they received to make that choice.
You raise some very important points Meg, about the bias in some information that women may be receiving. I agree that information needs to be balanced and based on facts not emotions. It is hard because it is such an emotional issue.
