Been a while

Well, it's been a while since my last post and quite a bit has happened since then.

My partner and I moved from Darwin to Kalumburu, then to Kununurra.

I've started working as a relief teacher and will be appearing in my first ever stage show after I joined the Theatre Society in town. Very exciting.

Slept overnight on a boat and caught my first ever giant black jewfish (mulloway some people call them).

I've been back for my first mammogram and physical check up - everything was good. I go back in September for the next one, then March 2013 for the next mammo.

I've been to Canberra for a holiday, started writing stories and am just doing stuff that I've never done before because it's time to do stuff that I've always wanted to do. From here on in, no holding back - just do it.

  • Hey Allison,

that's great news! Congratulations. Here's looking forward to the next one!!!

  • Congratulations on the result.  I am off to have my first ultrasound and mammo since chemo next month.  XLeonie

  • Hi Carol and Leonie,

Wow what wonderful changes you have made to your lives!  Get out there and live is my motto! Goodluck with the move, Leonie and let us know how the speaking tour goes. Sounds like a wonderful way to give back to others.

Gooluck Carol too on your new town. I was a member of  ZATS (Zeehan Amateur theatre Society) on the West Coast of Tassie many years ago. We did Oklahoma! Had a ball! Enjoy!

    Keep in touch girls,

    Alison xxxx

  • Hi Carol,  We are not moving too far.  Just down the road.  We purchased an investment home 2 years ago and have had it tenanted.  When I got my second diagnosis and had to give up work we decided that we would move into the investment home - from highset to lowset.  We figured that we should be living in more comfort with the pool and lovely garden instead of letting "losers" reck it.  Keep on fishing.  I went dragonboating this morning (have not been for months).  God it was so beautiful on the lagoon.  There were about 50 black swans on the water.  I reckon my body will feel the pain tomorrow but for today I will keep the lovely memory. XLeonie

  • Hi Leonie,

where are you moving house from? It can be a total drag having to pack everything up. Suddenly, you open a draw or a cupboard and find something you haven't seen for years!!  It can bring back such good memories and instead of throwing it out (like you probably should cause you haven't used it for years) you pack it up gently and store it away until finding it again in another 10 years!!

I love the thought of talking to other people about how cancer isn't the end of life as we know it - rather, it's the start of a new journey and once all the treatments are over, we start a brand new life. I'm in awe of anyone who can do it on a regular basis.

As for the fish, that was taken before BC. The new picture I've posted was taken over the Easter weekend - a black jewfish - caught with a dirty bit of pilchard and squid. Love that fishing.

Take care and stay in touch,

    Carol

  • Hi Alison,

I've wanted to get to Ningaloo Reef for a while now. I've heard that - not only is the place just beautiful - but that the fishing is pretty good as well. I'm hoping the mammo and ultrasound results are good for you. I was pretty apprehensive before getting them done, then having to wait for the results, but grateful to find out that everything was clear.

I don't have kids, and with the chemo and the tamoxifen, the chance has totally passed me by. No eggs left to fertilise. I'm not worried by it, cause as a teacher I get my fill of kids every day. The best thing about that is that I get to give them back at the end of the day!!!

Also, I just seem to have so much I want to do now. We're off to New Guinea next year for a big fishing trip, and off to Bali later this year - cause my partner's promised!

Keep in touch, and again, I hope everything goes well,

    Carol

  • Yes this BC does make us look at life in a different way.  I am now retired at 55, moving house and loving every minute of my life.  I am off to speak to a group of Business Women next Tuesday on behalf of QCC and of course I tell my story on behalf of BCNA as a trained Community Liaison Officer.  This is what I love to do - talk and help others.  BC has opened up many opportunities for me and it looks like it has done the same for you.  You go Girl.  Congratulations on the fish -looks impressive.  (there are so few fish here in Central Queensland or I am using the wrong bait) XLeonie
