Arimidex and bone pain

Hi ladies, just wondering how everyone else is feeling on Arimidex.  I was on tamoxifen for a year but just had a full hysterectomy so now on Arimidex.

I recently started a new job and thought it was the chair and/or my posture, for the pain in my shoulders is awful (also my hips).... I feel like I'm 100 and not 49...   I've heard that its possibly the Arimidex causing all my aches and pains??

  • Hi Angie,

I am 49 too and I have been on tamoxifen for two and a bit years. Recently I had a pelvic ultrasound which found thickening of the uterine wall which is quite common on tamoxifen I'm told. As a result of this I was sent off for a D&C ie to have the lining surgically scraped out.

I am just wondering why you can't take tamoxifen after a hysterectomy given that it has a deleterious effect on the uterus anyway. You would no longer have the thickening problem to worry about or the risk of uterine or endometrial cancers.

I understand that aromotase inhibitors like arimidex are slightly more effective in reducing the risk of BC recurrence in post-menopausal women (as I am myself now) but tamoxifen is still an effective treatment even after menopause and it doesn't give you all the aches and pains.  I know some people do have unpleasant symptoms on tamoxifen but I've found it to be fine so when my oncologist suggested switching to an AI after my periods stopped I opted to stay on tamoxifen. She seemed fine with that.

  • Hi Angie, I started on Arimidex 12 months ago and yes it does give you aches and pains but I have really ramped up the amount of exercise I do and the results have been fantastic. I don't need any pain relief and the only pain I get is stiffness if I stay in the car too long. I walk for 45 mins each day, do Aqua aerobics in the shallow end of the pool so it becomes weight bearing and do light gym work. I had my 12 months check up and my bone density is up ( yahoo ) and all blood test results are great. My advice is get a fit bit flex and count your steps, get a dog that demands a walk everyday and have lots of breaks at work when you stretch and move. It takes a while but your body will cope. Good luck, Sue
  • I have been on Arimidex since June, I get aches and pains, not unbearable though. (Touch wood) I take panadol osteo morning and night and that helps. I have noticed my appetite has increased, not sure if that is connected to Arimidex.Hope the pain eases for you,

    Hazel xx

  • Arimidex is known for the bone and muscular pain, I would have thought that would have been explained to you.

There is a very long post on here regarding the topic, perhaps if you search you can find it, you may find some remedies.

I was on it for about 4 months but got a rare side effect so was taken off it immediately.

Through that period my bone pain was unbearable to be honest.

    Good luck wiht some remidies
