Any suggestions for arm sensations?

Hi wonderful people out there

Does anyone have any ideas, success stories with easing the strange, sometimes uncomfortable feelings or lack of in your arm?

I had a mastectomy and 4 lymph nodes removed on May 27. I don't need any pain relief except when travelling and am finding the exercises relatively comfortable to keep up with and doing some good but am battling with the arm sensation which feels like I have a cut or graze on the inside of my arm.

Any comments would be really appreciated.?

  • Hello hippyviv

I was enticed by your comment 'I have got some brilliant advice from here'!! :)

I am 4 weeks post op and the burning sensation under my arm is beginning to ease. I have not used the purple cushion at all for the last few days. I do have some cording which seems to be getting worse. I have been doing my stretches. have been referred to a physio, but can't attend for 2 more weeks. I also begin radiation in 2 weeks.

    So, any advice and tips?

    Thanks

  • Thanks Viv

Must admit that strictly doing the exercises and some massage has really helped and I was even starting to get 'cocky' until yesterday when I had the infusaport inserted - has limited the supporting movement of the 'good arm' and stsalled going onto the next level of exercises. Still I need to be satisfied that the razor blade feelings have certainly decreased and hopefully the infusaport arm will settle down soon.

I'm going into work for the morning tomorrow so I feel a little normal before I s?tart chemo Monday ?w?h?i?c?h? will be a new challenge to keep me busy?.

Thanks for your words and I'll try to keep you posted. xx

  • Hi Dette

I had the most terrble arm problems after my mastectomy and 12 nodes removed nearly a year ago. Initailly no-one could even touch the arm it was so sore and sensitive but now it's fine have the odd strange sensation but nothing like I started with . I did my exercises religiously, moisturised my arm a lot and also massaged it 2 - 3 times a day. Just before I went back to work I found a great remedial massage lady who does lymphatic drainage of my arm and chest for me now monthly and have found that really helpful. I took up dragon boat paddling about a month ago and that has made a big difference to my arm movement so time does play a big factor in full recovery.

    Have patience and good luck!

  • Hi and thanks Annie

I will certainly give it a go and I suspect may well work for me. I am allergic to dressings and used ice packs when struggling with skin reactions during which time I didn't have as much concern with this sensation.

I see you are done with chemo - worth celebrating I reckon!! Still a journey I have to venture into.

    All the best

  • Many thanks for the suggestions - I'm on the lookout for a remedial masseuse, have the Optiderm and massaging whenever hits hard. The biggest challenge for me Tanya is the time one - I'm not known for my patience, I always want to do or have it to happen yesterday!

    Thanks again, Dette
