Hi Michelle
I had my mastectomy and reconstruction done in the same op and had no problems. I had a latissimus dorsi reconstruction this time and a TRAM flap last time (2003 - but that one was delayed due to an allergic reaction). I'll only speak of the most recent one here.....
It wasn't particularly painful and the only area of discomfort for me was under my arm where they push the muscle under the skin from your back to your front - it was swollen for quite a while and it felt like I had something stopping my arm from going all the way down to my side. The worst thing for me was that I had to lie flat on my back to sleep for a few weeks! It was a bit weird when I am used to sleeping on my side but I got used to it pretty quickly.
