Allergic Reaction

Taxotere..... even its name sounds evil. Chemo #1 saw me Febrile and nuetropaenic, #2 wasn't too bad except for the mouth ulcers and reflux but here I am on day 9 since round 3 and I am in a bad way. :-( my specialist says it is a delayed and severe allergic reaction to the Taxotere. It started on the back of my scalp as I woke up on the morning of day 7. Reeeeaaally itchy. Spread to my armpits 2 hours later, to my groin by lunchtime and it hasn't stopped yet! It starts as a small red lump then grows to a big round welts, grows friends and they all link in to a huge, red, stinging itchy patch in all the heat spots of my body. I can't sit down because it covers my whole butt and down the back of my upper legs, all my groin and between my legs (like chafe), my armpits and over my boobs and across my stomach. O yes and still the scalp. I am one huge welt! I also am sufffering with ulcers down my trach to my stomach. The hospital staff have pumped me full of all the meds they can think of but they are not working and i have been told I need to sit at home and just "ride it out"....help! My husband is painting me with Calamine lotion, I am laying in an airconned room to control the temperature, taking regular phenergan, loratidine and Dex steroids for the itch, ppi and Renitidine for the stomach with backups of Mylanta and Endone . Has anyone else had problems. like this? Its making me very sad and I don't like that... I'm wondering if a bath of salts might work
  • Hi girls So good to come and find the support I really needed here! I Googled "angioedema" and its a checklist of what I am experiencing. I am much better today. The symptoms have backed off somewhat and are manageable with ice packs and Calamine lotion coupled with all the meds. I even pushed my luck and went to the beach for lunch with my family. On the way home we spotted some good friends having "sundowners" at another favourite beach front spot so we joined in there, too. the only reason I came home in the end was because I was overdue for some phenergan and ice packs. just got home and feeling sooo much better. ;-) I'm not sick enough to knock back a glass of bubbly. I assume that I will just keep improving every day from here. Only one more cycle.....
  • Hi Lisa, I've just finished four rounds of TC and while I didn't experience anything as bad as what you're going through, I did get an itchy, lumpy rash on my scalp, across my chest, my abdomen and thighs.  It mainly bothered me at night in bed - I guess when I was warmest - and it affected me most at about days 4-10 after each treatment. What you're going through sounds horrible. I hope things get better soon. Janet.

  • Just a warm salt bath can't hurt-might help. What you describe is angioedema. I had it once, welts joined up, my lips got bigger and my throat felt scratchy. I got pumped at hospital with adrenaline and hydro cortisone and it subsided quickly. It's kinda like a slow allergic reaction- I think mine was a build up of aspirin at the time. Go straight to hospital if your lips/tongue swell up.You poor thing- bad enough having the taxotere side effects let alone a reaction.Hope you are feeling better real soon.
