You don't mention what type of cancer you had removed. If it is aggressive or grade 3, the surgeon will sometimes suggest having both breasts off as a precautionary measure, especially with your mother's history of breast cancer. There is nothing wrong with getting another opinion if it is worrying you. I had both off as there was a family history and I didn't want the worry or the risk. Have not regretted it for a moment.
