1st Mamogram after surgery

I was diagnosed on Valentines Day -yippee! then surgery planning day on hubby's birthday....After surgery (lump + lymphs)chemo, radiation am now due for my 1st post treatment mammo and ultra sound. I'm not worried about the ultra sound but my breast is still so sore even now - is the mammogram going to be excruciatingly painful? They sure used to be beyond 'uncomfortable' in the past -but with extra lumps??

  • Hi finita again,

just so  that you don't think that I am super woman, I just wanted to add that my breast is still very tender and my under arm were I had the 3 nodes removed too.  I cannot seem to be able to do anything without it reminding me that I cannot over do it , because although not painful there is lots of discomfort and  the Arimidex side effects are not helping a bit...but I am learning to live with it all and fighting my side effects by doing things and going for walks etc...

  • Hi Finita here, we are all different ... I had my first mammogram after surgery  Tuesday 11th and I was truly surprised at it not been painful,  nor  was it later on either , maybe I was just lucky and as for the ultrasound the radiologist told me to have another one in 3 months as it appears to be something but no need for FNA at this stage. I will be visiting my surgeon on the 25th for the full results . My recovey has been good but 2 months leading to the mammogram I was really very anxious and nervous and I guess that I still am and will be  until the 25th

    regards

  • Thanks all. I think the pain killer prep a good idea and will try and remember to get the U/S first like suggested.

Our Valentines day was a celebration of survival - my daughter wrote a lovely poem from her current home in Germany so I'll put it on Mich's happy blog site!

  • Hi Skarch33..my birthday is on Valentines day.. I don't think my boob has ever recovered from surgery:(still so sore & painful for me, Hope it's not the way it's going to stay..radiation is making it worse, I would go with some pain relief for sure especially when your boob is still so sore..good luck & I hope all goes well for you:) Christine:) x
  • Hi Skarch33, I am due in early April for the big 1 year check.  When my cancer was found it was with ultrasound, they then did mammogram, they did 2 films first, lump not shown, changed all the equipment and took more pics, all up they took about 6 pics. Lots of squishes and was very painful, I would suggest you have ultrasound first and then mammogram.

My breast is still very tender, lumpectomy was 30/04/13. Last radiation 30/06/13. Will be taking what ever pain killers I have, may even take something a bit stronger, think I will feel better if I am in la la land lol.

    All the best

  • I have been thinking the very same thing, even though I'm only halfway throught my treatment. Forgot my 'one day at a time' mantra. My breast is still sore and I'm already hoping that it is better before my mamm/scan in June/July! Hope all goes well for you, I'm interested in what other ladies have to advise, take care,

    Hazel xx
