Anti-werewolf pep talk?
Hello lovely ladies!
Calling for a pep talk! I'm about to start taking my tamoxifen for the first time. It feels like a big step - such a long-term change / commitment (10 yrs+). Aside from the 'no going back' aspect, it's the drop in oestrogen that freaks me out.
Being peri-menopausal I was already getting those signs - like growing a goatee :o dry skin, monthly migraines, etc etc. Now that my lady hormones with take another steep dive - what the hell kind of werewolf am I going to turn into?!
I'm single and, while I don't need the validation of a man, it will be nice if they don't actually scream and run away. Particularly under a romantic full moon!

- CellyKMember@LucyE That sounds rather mysterious - how can I keep an eye on them if they're hidden? Lol. Do you have any in mind?
- AnonymousNot applicableGood to hear @CellyK. Just keep an eye on the hidden effects.
- CellyKMember@Romla Hi there! So - it's 3 weeks today that I've been on Tamoxifen. The advice I got on this forum was really helpful. I got a non-generic brand, and have taken it late night, before bed (also the easiest time to remember). It's been fine.
At first a few cramps as though I was going to have an early period, but then nothing. Period still hasn't shown up - looks like I might skip it. Whoo hoo! Another bonus is I haven't had even a shadow of a migraine (hope I'm not speaking too soon!) - which is quite unusual. Would be crazy if Tamoxifen actually stopped them! Early days - we'll see.
Downsides - but really minor, are drier scalp & hair. But overall my skin is no drier than usual, so that's weird. A few 'warm' flushes at about 4 am, but getting up for a large, cold glass of water does the trick. I expected to need to get up for a pee in like an hour - but no! I seem to sleep well after that. Maybe I need to hydrate more during the day.
My brain is 'all over the place' - but I put that more down to delayed shock than hormones (or maybe it's both?). I have literally let go of the idea of having a reliable memory at the moment. I just use lots of post-it notes (everywhere!) and electronic reminders. I can't blame chemo brain, because didn't have chemo. A counsellor says it's my brain telling me it needs a break from solving problems and just dealing with major shiz.
It sounds like your brain is pretty exhausted too! And quite understandable. I hope you get a chance to have breathing space. I'm reserving blocks of time in my diary for 'mental recovery' time (like bush walks, reading or drawing - or having a facial!). Otherwise it will seem like a good idea - that I never get around to. - AnonymousNot applicable@CellyK I was on Tamoxifen for 1 year. I didn't have many symptoms, but it can cause endometrial hyperplasia (pre-cancerous/ cancerous changes). It happened to me. Best of luck with your treatment.
- RomlaMember@CellyK just a follow up - 5 weeks on hormone therapy - Femara in my case- had a few hot flushes which are bearable in this cold weather , am post menopausal and think have less facial hair than before tablets , possibly memory not quite as sharp and think I need to take things a little slower rather than my usual manic pace but otherwise ok I think. Taking Caltrate Bone health tablets and had my first Prolia injection to build bones thinned by tablets ( not an issue with tamoxifen though as it strengthens bones)- walk for an hour 5 days and stretch&balance class on the other days so joints seem ok atm. As a late parent to twin teenage boys finding things bit hard but think that's not related to the tablets. Hope things are going well for you.PS Armed with every tablet suggested by the ladies on the site from fish oil, curcumin, panadol osteo etc and yet to use them as feel ok. Am not baying at the moon yet but do get tired but been a busy year 3 major ops , radiotherapy and twin teenage boys driving me crazy at times
- melclarityMember@Romla thanks, yes the email was brilliant, very concise and summed up the problem beautifully. I agree, would love to see this issue addressed as Its a problem.
- RomlaMember@melclarity Have sent an email to Christian Porter federal mp who has been active in the bc area recently and also a message to Anne- Marie at bcna . Fiona Richardson sadly passed away recently - there appears to have been a cluster of victorian state female MPs recently with bc. Will check out Jane Prentice . Also if can figure out how to copy my email will send you a copy of what I sent to Christian Porter on your personal mail. No time like the present especially as Connie sadly passed away today - don't want to be too cynical as she was a beautiful lady but maybe some media coverage the pollies might like to join with.
- melclarityMemberHmmm Jane Garrett has had BC and so has Fiona Richardson but they are State MPs? Aha!! Jane Prentice is a Federal MP who has had BC..
- RomlaMemberFired one off to Anne- Marie. Might help if I find a federal mp either with bc or family member with it plus the advocacy of the AMA - any other ideas gratefully received
- melclarityMemberSounds like a great start!! am happy to help too! let me know anything I can do. x
