In amongst the images from my initial mammogram last year was an AI report image. The AI had marked up areas of concern in both breasts and gave them a score out of 100 as well as an overall risk of "elevated".
No one spoke to me about the image so I googled to try and understand it. I personally would have found it helpful to have it explained (though maybe they weren't expecting me to look at the images so closely).
The area with the highest score (89) was biopsied - that was my tumour. A mid-level score suspicious area (67) of calcifications was biopsied but came back benign.
At my one year mammogram I was looking forward to being able to compare the AI results to see whether it would see anything in my lumpectomy area and whether the other suspicious areas scored differently. Disappointingly they didn't provide an AI report image - maybe it's not so accurate post-surgery and radiation? or maybe they discontinued it? I don't know.
I would hope that it never got to the point where the AI is relied upon solely and that AI is used to guide humans who still look over everything.
