Years ago when I needed a hysterectomy my ( female) GP asked me “ do you want me to refer you to a female”?
I said “ I just want the best surgeon “.
The specialist was a male and did an excellent job.
When my GP ( a different one , also female) gave me my cancer diagnosis she recommended a breast cancer surgeon who she said was excellent and had operated on many of her patients.
He was also a man and was excellent.
My plastic surgeon was also male and my radiation oncologist and oncologist are women.
I just wanted to have specialists who I could be confident in their expertise.
I think traditionally surgery has been a more male dominated area of medical specialty but that is slowly changing just as the proportion of women becoming medical specialists is.
Any embarrassment and anxiety I might feel about baring my body to a male Doctor is way outweighed by the desire to give myself the best chance of a good medical outcome.
