First oncology radiation appointment

I have my first appointment with the radiology oncology team on Wednesday.  How long after the first appointment should I expect to begin radiation?

  • Hi MargiJ
It usually depends on the healing of your surgical wounds.  They usually won't do Rads until the surgery site has healed. If you are all healed, it can start soon after they've done the 'mapping'.

I had my surgery in mid Jan & had my Rads just before Easter.  I'd finished just as Easter started - Mon-Fri for 4 weeks & 2 days of 'boosters'.

These days, they may give higher doses over shorter periods of time!

Wishing you all the best - personally, I found it the easiest of all the treatment I had (tho I didn't have chemo!)

    Take care.

  • MargiJ There might be variation based on what treatment came before, your location, etc.

In my case I met the radiation oncologist a few days before Christmas to discuss the treatment, check my shoulder movement, etc.

Two weeks later, in the new year, I had a planning session (I get the impression that would have been sooner if it wasn't for the holidays) where they did imaging, made me a head pillow, and gave me four little blue dot tattoos.

I was meant to start radiation one week later however the radiation oncologist had to unexpectedly go overseas. For him to have time to do the designing or programming or whatever he did they had to push my start date a further two days.

All up it was three weeks and a few days from first appointment to first session, but I think during normal times it could have been as quick as a week and a half.
