JRH I'm sorry for your diagnosis - that sounds like a rather complicated way to get told.
I was in a different situation with no family history. Between diagnosis from my GP and meeting my surgeon I thought through many different scenarios. My surgeon explained the characteristics of my cancer (small size, slow growing) and helped me understand that the impact and recovery from a lumpectomy would be less on my body, ability to work, etc.
There are many factors that go in to a medical team's recommendations and also into a person's own wishes. The best surgeons will listen, advise and help you make a decision that is best for you.
