Unhelpful opinions on recon

Having confidence and strength in making choices and decisions is so preciously positive when navigating your way through breast cancer.

I recall how some of my friends and family talked like medical experts when discussing my breast cancer. They assumed they knew what I had and what I needed. It also seemed like they were trying to write or tell my story - to make themselves feel better! Sort of their way of coping - but an unhelpful way to communicate.

I would try to respond - not react - to their unhelpful advice. Rather than feel I had to justify my decisions or explain my choices,  I would just remind them that everyone's breast cancer journey is different and deeply personal  - from diagnosis through treatment into recovery and survivorship. It was a polite way of closing down the conversation - without having to actually say - "Mind your own business" - or worse! It also helped me feel calmer and more in control - and less stressed!

Also I learnt more about self compassion and how important it is to nurture old, and new, relationships when you are facing challenge and change in life. It all helped me to deepen my own empathy toward others and heal ( both inside and outside).
