Recon
Hi all,
I joined your group this week and briefly caught up with some of your journeys, particularly those about flap reconstruction. The most recent of these I found were early 2014 (a bit of learning to do on searching and navigation, you think?) and I wondered if some of these people were still active in the group and how things were working out. Delighted to see this morning to see yesterday's posts from Chris and Paula and especially how chipper you both sounded!
I underwent a mastectomy in early 2013, but have only recently received the OK to explore reconstruction options. I know quite a few people who have had expander/implant reconstruction - with varying results - so was quite comfortable with the process and possible outcomes. So it was quite a shock when my surgeon explained how this would need to be implemented in my particular case - which effectively ruled it out.
So, on to flat reconstruction and I'm favouring abdominal, although wonder if I'm taking on too much given a historically minimalistic approach wherever possible. I had a great run through the initial surgery and subsequent chemo - no pain, nausea or any of the other nasties I now others had to endure. But it did leave me with extreme fatigue. My beloved nursed me through, taking on all the cooking, cleaning and shopping on top of his busy, full-time job.
I'm reluctant to put this load back on him for an extended period and wonder how long it took others to get through to a reasonable level of activity/self-reliance? Any and all experiences would be appreciated.
cheers
Megan
