Hi Kel, what I find great about the procedure I have had is the natural warm new breasts I have that feel and act just like breasts, except of course for the lack of sensation. But the lack of sensation happens with all types of reconstruction i believe.
You have a few things to think about in terms of what will fit with your busy lifestyle at present, and recovery is quite long but not impossible especially if you get good support. And my understanding is that you can delay the reconstruction until it better suits you time wise. The whole tram/diep procedure can take 12 months or more depending if you go public or private. that includes the sometimes 3 procedures until you get to the finished result. If you think you will have a delayed recon due to the skin damage from radiation you have lots of time to plan and some good people to chat to on the recon blog who have gone that way.
There is a lot to consider this time around for you so take your time to get well informed. Find a sympathetic plastic surgeon who will understand your needs and reservations.
My tummy is lovely and flat, still a bit tight sometimes at 5 months on. I have a dirty big crooked scar that has faded a little but should be revised in the next surgery. I have very little sensation in that area too, and not sure if it will return. It doesnt look or feel very natural, like a simple tummy tuck would. I miss my soft belly actually. And my belly button is off centre. All this I can live with but still worth mentioning. Not sure how other women feel about their tummies.
Good luck with it all, and keep us posted.
