Nipple Reconstruction

Hi Ladies

I am just wondering if there are any of you out there who have had nipple reconstruction surgery prior to tattoing?

I have discovered that there are lots of different methods being used, including nipples created with flex hd.  If you have had the surgery can you please tell me about your experience.

Also wondering if anyone can recommend surgeons in Brisbane who are doing the nipple reconstruction and have had good outcomes.

Thanking you in advance

  • Hi Jeniren,

this is the procedure I had(the same as Jane and Rowdy I think). Jane is right and they can flatten out. I actually kept mine protected under nipple shields (the breast feeding type with the tops cut down) for three months and they have held there shape well. I am yet to get them tattooed.

  • Hi Georgia I live in the west and my plastic surgeon gave me the number of a cosmetic tattoist. They have a web site the place is called Permanently Yours. They are in Pascoe Vale South on Bell Street if you know the area.

A student did mine and there was no cost, fully supervised. I have to go back in a month for a touch up. I'm really happy it looks amazing. I'm going to post some pics on the reconstruction site when I work out how to do it.

  • Hi Rowdy, I was wondering if you can tell me where you got your tattoo done? I'm a little way off getting it, but sounds like you are really happy with the results. I'm also in Melbourne. Thanks, Georgia

  • Hi Jeniren I had the same type of nipple reconstruction as Jane. I had mine last year and last Saturday I had my nipple tattoed looks amazing. I'm from Melbourne good luck

  • Hi Jeniren, I had nipple reconstruction in late November last year. I'd had reconstruction some 6 months before and the breast had dropped down and healed well by that time.

You're right in that there are a few options for nipple reconstruction, depending on the surgeon. Probably the most common reconstruction (which I had) was where the surgeon made a small incision on the reconstructed breast and the skin from this tissue flap was formed into a nipple shape and small sutures (stitches) were used to secure the shape. I understand one of the newer techniques some surgeons are using is to insert a piece of synthetic skin product – such as Alloderm or Flex HD - into the reconstructed nipple so it doesn't flatten out too much, which most reconstructed nipples do over time. Hopefully someone here, or from the Breast Reconstruction group, will be able to give you more information about their experiences with Flex HD.  If you are a Breast Reconstruction Group member, just click on the All Topics drop down menu on the group's loading page and you should find some posts about nipple reconstructions, accellular matrix and surgeons, and feel free to post this question into the group too :-)

I had my surgery in Sydney but hopefully others might pop in and recommend some surgeons in your area. Best wishes, Jane xx
