Great Resource on Reconstruction

Hi lovely ladies, I'm about to embarked on the next stage of BC with a mastectomy and immediate reconstruction which will be coming up very soon. I don't know exactly when the surgery will be but I am seeing the PS next week. I have been trying to research this but other than great stories and experience from our Pink Ladies, I've found that there is nothing much out there to give us good information on this critical subject. I happened upon a blog by an American lady who mentioned a book called 'The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook: Issues and Answers from Research to Recovery' by Kathy Steligo. So I googled this and found a sneak preview. After reading the preview I decided to download the book to my iPad (it's also available in paperback form). I'm so glad I did as it is the best information on this subject that I have found. The author has been through BC twice and she has gathered information from experts in the field. It is an American publication so some of the info like costs and web links are not relevant to Australia but I found that this doesn't matter. I now have a pretty good understanding of the various procedures and the author has put a lot of helpful info right from the mastectomy stage to recovery after reconstruction. My husband has also read it and he can now understand what I will be going through much better. The website I got the book from was 'Bookworld' and I paid $13.95 for the ebook version. The paperback is $24.95. Well worth it I think! If you google Bookworld and then do a search on the book title, you'll find it. It is a very comprehension read and has answered a lot of questions I had already. Really glad I found it and hope it helps my Pink Sisters too. Love Jane xxxx

    Hi Janey,

I will get one of the team in the office to keep an eye out for the book.

In the mean time you might also find the 'Breast reconstruction' page on our website a help. It provides some links off to useful resources in Australia from Cancer Council etc. You can find the page here: http://www.bcna.org.au/new-diagnosis/treatment/breast-reconstruction

Good luck with your surgery :-)

  • PS. If you are looking for this book, make sure you get the 'Third Edition'. The book was first published in 2005 but this edition has been revised in 2012. Cheers Jane

  • Good luck with your Chemo Stemgirl. It will be over before you know it. I've decided to think of the process as stepping stones. I've stepped to the next stone now and will balance there a bit until I can step to the next one. Sometimes the stones can get a bit wobbly but I'm determined not to fall off. Hope your stones aren't too wobbly. Love Jane xxx
  • Thanks for the recommendation. Once I've finished chemo I'll need to be thinking about this.
