First year check up after lumpectomy

Hi all,
I would like to know what your experiences were at your first year mammogram after a lumpectomy. I had a mammogram this morning, followed up by an ultrasound. I’m seeing my specialist next week but that is such a long time away. It’s so nerve wrecking. When would they recommend a biopsy? Is that usually done straight away after the mammogram/ultrasound showed something up or would my specialist discuss this with me first?

Hi @Ella1611, scan anxiety is normal especially that first year. Keep busy doing things you like. My first year mammogram and ultrasound after the lumpectomy was clear. No biopsy taken. I cried when I had the scans but I got my results almost immediately after so less stress in that regard. Hang in there.

I was actually told to book in a biopsy immediately after they did the ultrasound.

@Ella1611 - 9 years later I have never been told to book a biopsy.
Was there some doubt at that time @Blossom1961 ?
Also, I have never been told the results immediately.
Scanxiety is there every time I go for my annual tests.

@Ella1611 ..... Scanxiety is very real - but try & keep it 'under control' by getting out there and keeping as busy as you can, doing things you love xx

I had my Year 5 Mammogram and Ultrasound just over a week ago - my surgery was in 2018 .... and last year was the first time I didn't get a 'call back and biopsy' ...... and this year was the 2nd time!!  YAY!!
I've never had 'same day' results either - matter of fact, I still haven't received my 'official' results yet - tho in discussion with my Rad Onc (who I see next week) she let slip that everything looks 'good'!  Phew!

Even tho it was upsetting to get the callback & biopsies over the previous 3 years - I actually looked at them as being THOROUGH and being 'sure' there wasn't any issue to be concerned about.  xx

take care & all the best.

@Ella1611 This will be a long week & we've all gone through this during our own cancer journey. I had a lumpectomy 6 years ago. Each year I worry, after having my annual MMG & thats normal but I am one of the lucky ones who get my results straight after & I have never had any problems. I never had to have an ultrasounds or biopsy either. I guess we are all different & our surgeons ensure we have the appropriate tests for our needs. Hang in there, you are half way through your week. Stressing wont change your results so just be kind to yourself & try to remain positive. Ill sure you will be fine. love & hugs xx <3

Good news! Like @Anne65, I have always received my results straight away, which reduces the anxiety level considerably. As you say, you will know for next time and in the meantime, celebrate a good result!

Well done @Ella1611 for being so proactive rather than sit and wait.  We have to advocate for ourselves during this time.  Good news that the biopsy is not needed.  All the best.  💖

@Ella1611 That is such great news & good for you on taking control & ringing your surgeon. You must be feeling such a sense of relief & you have learnt a lot about the process this time around so it will make it a little easier for next time. Every year you will get that scanxiety but it does get a little less as you tick off each year. Go out & celebrate!! xx <3
