A look at notifications and private messages

Hi everyone. Notifications are something we've received a lot of feedback about. Currently, you may receive a few different email notifications. There's a daily and weekly digest that looks like this:

Clicking on the unread messages link takes you to your Messages. Clicking on the blog posts links takes you to the Posts page. You may also get an email when a group sends a broadcast and when someone sends you a private message. When someone recommends or comments on your post, you get a notice to your Messages.

The feedback we've received about notifications includes that you have to click on too many things and that the Messages system is clunky. Additionally, we don't think that the automated email message shown above is helpful. Those daily and weekly digests are going bye-bye.

When someone does something, like comment on your post, you'll see a little notification at the top right corner, similar to Facebook. All the blue letters are links so you can click on them and go to your wall (profile), to your post, discussion, group, etc.

Additionally, you'll be able to choose between receiving an email or a popup for different kinds of activity.

If you opt to get a popup, it appears at the lower left corner.

I'd love to show what the emails look like, but this isn't live yet. It's still in development.

When you receive a private message, you also get a notification at the top right corner, again, much like Facebook, and you can see it at a glance.

Here's the view from the Inbox:

Notice that these say "Just you". This tells you that that a message is between you and one other person, as opposed to a group conversation.

Here's a look at a message:

Notice the sidebar. You can add people to a conversation and you can also leave a group conversation.

This is all looking very positive, and so glad to hear that you are dumping the daily and weekly digests, I very rarely bothered to open them, this sounds much more efficient and useful. Thanks for letting us know how plans are developing for the new look network, it is great to be kept in the loop.

Thanks for this information - is there a quicker way to delete read messages - like a save only those ticked button? My message box fills up, largely with indirect messages on posts I have commented on, which I don't need to keep.

    many thanks

the new developments are sounding great

it will be wonderful for the site to work more easily for everyone and also to be user friendly and not bogged down in emails etc when a notification will be easier...

thank you for working on this for us all.

There's no quick way to delete a lot of messages at once :-( This is on my wish list for future development. On the bright side, you won't receive as many system generated messages as you do now.

This is sounding like a much more efficient way of handling posts and messages.

Thanks for keeping us up to date.
