Florsheim has just released a new BCNA range of shoes for men and woman. Our Partnerships Coordinator, Zoe Jennings, tells us how this idea was born at one of our information forums. When I started working at BCNA in January, I got to know a few of our wonderful volunteers and their sense of fashion when it comes to footwear. I thought it would be great to have a beautiful, comfortable hot pink wedge for our lovely ladies to wear to support and promote BCNA. After doing my research on the various shoe companies, I knew that Florsheim was the best fit with BCNA and our members. A meeting was set up and we pitched the idea. Florsheim immediately agreed. They were very generous and I knew it was going to be an incredible partnership. The BCNA range recently launched in all Florsheim stores. There are six women’s and three men’s shoes. The best part is that with every pair purchased, $40 is donated to BCNA. This helps support our programs and services such as our information forums, kits, and the online network. So head into any Florsheim store to pick up your favourite pair! For more information about our partnerships. Active & wellness tip Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can! Everyone is different so it is important to set yourself realistic goals and to listen to your body, start excising at an appropriate level for you. No gym membership? No problem. Use basic items that are already have. Cans of food for weights, walk up and down the stairs. Any exercise is better than none and more is better than less so try and avoid inactivity. Here is a little inspiration leading into the weekend from our creative members of the online network Have a lovely weekend, Ann-Marie x51Views0likes2CommentsFriday Update!

This is a very good move by BCNA. I joined two years ago when the community discussion was contained within something that looked like a bulletin board. I understood it. I could post and even edit my own posts. I could find my way around. As a person familiar with online groups I was relieved that I'd found somewhere that might be a help to me since I'd just been blind-sided with a cancer diagnosis. I was so relieved. Then the site changed and I realised it wasn't easy to navigate, It didn't feel good and I couldn't take control of my own information especially old posts. It felt more like a blog with limited control. I couldn't even edit a simple mistake once posted. I felt exposed and that making any post at all was a risk especially as some of the things we talk about are private. I expressed my concerns and very quickly my posts were removed. It appeared feedback on this wasn't welcome. I knew straight away that wasn't a community that was going to help me and I left and went over to facebook looking to connect with people. That was a second-best option for me but I met some lovely people that I still see today. Two years have passed and I'm through treatment, although cancer concerns never leave us. I'm trying to re-integrate back into the workplace and adjust to my 'new normal'. I took a quick look here today and was so pleased that this is happening. Perhaps the new site will welcome and help people in a way that I didn't experience. I wish you people well in your endeavours to make a friendly and supportive site that caters to the needs of the bc community. Thank you.1View0likes3CommentsFriday Update!

Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) and the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) have delivered a joint submission to the two major parties contesting the 2016 federal election, the Liberal/National Coalition and the ALP. The submission, A better journey for all Australians affected by cancer, calls for the development of a national cancer strategy in response to the increasing incidence of cancer in Australia. We support a national cancer strategy that addresses the full spectrum of the cancer journey – from prevention and screening through diagnosis and treatment to palliative and end of life care, and the need for ongoing research into treatments and a cure. Our submission uses breast cancer to demonstrate that, while good progress has been made to date, there is still much to be done. To find out more, please visit 2016 Federal Election Submission. Do you have trouble sleeping at night? BCNA has a new fact sheet that might help. You can download here it or order a hard copy here. Are you on social media? The Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) is the world’s premier society for supportive care in cancer. The Association will be hosting their annual conference this year in June in Adelaide. The conference brings together the world’s leading experts to examine and discuss symptoms and complications of cancer treatment, methods to reduce cancer induced side-effects as well as ways to address the emotional challenges associated with a cancer diagnosis. At this year’s meeting, a Patient Seminar will be held on June 22 from 2pm-6pm at the Intercontinental Hotel. The seminar will be an opportunity for patients, caregivers, and survivors to join and interact with clinical experts in supportive care. Short talks will be given by clinicians and cancer survivors. There will be time for questions and discussion about the cancer patient journey and how it changes lives. There is no charge for attendance, however, it is recommended to reserve your spot in advance. If you would like to register or to fund our more information about the event, please contact reg_mascc16@kenes.com.1View0likes0Comments
