I pack horsed all oveer the Victorian high country for years, sometimes being away for over two weeks. Proper packing; no back up vehicle though I'd sometimes go in with a 4WD before I left and do some water drops. I did a lot of that on my own, so you have to be well prepared. The pack horse has to carry everything you need for yourself and two horses so everything is kept to a minimum. Things can get a bit basic.
I remember one time arriving at Sheepyard Flat looking distinctly worse for wear. I was down at the river watering the horses and there was an Italian family camped close by. Nonna took one look at me and literally dragged me into their camp, made me strip to my singlet, sat me down with my headhover a bucket and started washing my hair. With home made soap. "Look at you, you need wash. And you smell.Your mother, she would be ashamed. "
Dumbfounded, I just sat there surrounded by complete strangers with my two horses tied to the front of their car while this woman scrubbed me. She gave me some soap, "I may myself, bring ash from the old country", which i carried with me for years. Best soap ever, but you didn't want to get it in your eyes.
