Wasted appointment with specialist

19/4/16, I had anticipated a switcheroo on my oncology specialist today and yes, you guessed it; I got a trainee doctor instead of my usual oncology dr. I asked is my doctor off sick? No, he’s in the next room I am just helping him out. Today is the day I am supposed to start my anti hormone treatment and you would think a properly qualified professional would see me on my first appointment but no, I get a trainee. His first comment in the form of a question was your blood tests all came back good hey? Just as well I had seen the GP yesterday who had given me the run down on my results. I am getting wise to these so called specialists.

Next he said I see your last scan was in December, should we be doing another now since chemo is finished? I said well since 2 ct scans and an ultrasound failed to detect any other cancer back then and since chemo would have shrunk anything to undetectable it’s not much point is it? Besides which I am allergic to CT scan dye. Oh, we’ll see you in 6 weeks for your next appointment then, here’s your Tamoxifen script, just get the pharmacist to print out the side effects pamphlet. That was it, what a waste of an appointment. The pharmacy at the cancer clinic doesn’t stock Tamoxifen so it’s either go to the hospital and get it filled or your local chemist. I chose the chemist and made sure they printed out the pamphlet for me as they didn’t ask or say anything to me as a first time user.

  • So sorry to hear about your disappointing appointment Brenda after you had such a great weekend with your father & brother.

I would certainly ring your BC nurse for support & hope that you have minimum side effects.

    Sending Big hugs.

    Eileen xx

  • Know that you can contact her. I phone and email when I have questions or need support.

  • Very frustrating when that happens.  Good luck. I am sure all will go well for you.  Suex

  • Funny you should say that, my breast nurse saw me in the waiting room and sat down for a chat. First time I have actually seen her since about early Feb.

  • Not good care by the Dr or the chemist! Hope the side effects are minimal for you and utilize the breast care nurses when you need to discuss things in between. Kath x
