Chemo: 1 down, 5 to go

Hello there, First chemo done! I had a great sleep last nigh and I think It helped me to feel much better today. As soon as I finished the treatment I said to my husband :" well I can do this , not bad at all" . Then I went home and I hit the wall! LOL It felt like being in the middle of the ocean , the nausea was very very strong and I was dizzy . I took two anti nausea tablets and they helped, I also had some home made chicken soup because I felt that my stomach needed some food to go throught all those drugs. I also drunk a lot of water and I keep drinking . This morning I had a peanut butter toast and a cup of green tea ( I couldn't risk it with coffee ) and 2 pills of steroids but even before the drugs I was already feeling much better , I even managed to pack lunches for school , getting the girls ready, clean the kitchen and have a shower. Now I'm done for the day ! My husband is taking care of school runs and I have dinners organised by the mums at school ( makethemameal is a great system that allows people to book a day they could help with meals). I am moved by all the kindness and willingness to help , even by people I barely know. I am usually a private and very Indipendent person but we don't have any family here to help and my husband is doing what he can while maintaining a demanding job, so any support is very very Aprreciated . Ok time to rest now , hope you are all feeling good today , here is puring with rain , a perfect day to stay on bed . Big hugs to all Federica x

  • Hi Federica

It sounds good for the start,  I found good sleep is very very important, I also got my hair cut the following week and now just 1mm seem a sign of falling.....

    Keep your mouth hygiene too.

Since you have kids in and out, please well prepare couple days later.... start your mouth cover, keep washing your hand, no hugging (sorry for kids) because white blood cell should start going down, by then your immunse system will down as well, in which you'll attract lots of germs, as far as you didn't reach 38 of the temperature, good control and resting, wait until your body work back for white blood cell, then the process is done.  (I was in hospital for 4days due to fever 38.1)

Keep lots of fresh fruit, vegitable (keep your bowel); plenty of fluid and exercise which to keep your body move and working itself.

This week by the time I prepare for 2nd drip this Friday, I found everything taste bitter, soy sauce is bitter; yoghurt is bitter, ice cream is bitter (only vanilla flaver will do)......  I wish I could be better to go for future drip when knowing how to play the round from the 1st time experience.

    Take care and good luck.

  • Glad you first chemo is going ok. I hit that wall a couple of times before I slowed myself down. The love out there is amazing! I too had meals dropped off, people got my kids from school, organised outings and helped when I had to fly to perth for treatment. It has been so nice to have such supportive friends around as I don't have any family around me either. They will never know just how much it has meant to me as a simple thank you and a heap of praise just doesn't cover it. I hope one day I can repay them, but for vastly different reasons (not BC!). Take care of yourself xxxT
  • You are doing so well, glad the first one is over!  I found the first 3 days at dinner time I all of a sudden got really hungry and was shovelling food down, and I would be wide awake at 2 in the morning, so the steroids were definitely doing their thing.  I got up first thing for my kids to, I kind of wanted to be there to wave them goodbye for the day and make sure they were ok.   YES that was me across from you, I had just had a meeting with my radiation Dr so I was still a bit upset/stressed, the joys!!  I am getting heaps of offers of food and time with the kids, there are a lot of beautiful Mums out there, glad you have some lovely ones around as well xx

  • You sound as though you are doing all the right things to help your body cope with chemo. Lightening the load is so important so that you can get through this part of treatment. Rest up and in a few days most of the chemo will have done its job and be out of the system. Take care. Deanne xxx
