I'm sooo not festive. I don't own any decorations and haven't had a Christmas meal in over twenty years. Bah, humbug!
On a serious note, it is a really shitty time for many people--and I'm not talking about those who have to deal with spoilt children and Aunty Beryl getting pissed and falling in the trifle.
I decided a few years ago not to put up decorations in my library. I got some very interesting reactions. My boss was livid, how dare I ignore tradition! On the other hand many lonely grieving people, or those from other cultures, found it a welcome respite from the relentless assault of carols, commercial cheer and obscene consumerism. This was in a town where carols, at ear splitting volume, were piped through speakers in the town centre all December and the whole place groaned under the weight of tinsel and lights. I figured if you like that sort of thing there was no shortage of it elsewhere and we would provide a refuge for those, and we are many, who don't like it for one reason or another.
